The Climate Discussion

A worried citizen and a denier discuss in good faith

Like you, Ivan was worried.

Antonis Christofides, 2019-04-30 00:00

Antonis, a denier and researcher, told him “you needn’t worry about this”.

Ivan respected Antonis’s opinion but wanted to form his own. He did some reading and crafted his private summary. He asked Antonis what he thought.

Antonis said: “Why don’t we have this discussion in public”? Ivan liked the idea. And this site was born.

Fun facts

Antonis Christofides, 2021-03-03 15:48

Hi!

Two fun facts that demonstrate how the media transmit news about climate these days.

Fun fact 1

Demetris Koutsoyiannis, my professor and a well-known denier, recently published a paper with the title “Revisiting the global hydrological cycle: is it intensifying?“. If you read the abstract, you’ll see that his answer to the question he poses is “no”.

The article became a hit. It was the most popular article of that journal in 2020. What does the marketing department of EGU think it says? (EGU is the organization that publishes that journal.) They think it talks about a “potential intensification of the global hydrologic cycle“, a finding that they group together with “extremely hot summers”.

Fun fact 2

On 13 February 2021, the Daily Telegraph published this article:

A bit later the same day, the article was changed to this:

The URL still has the original title: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/02/13/uk-weather-snow-way-thames-freezes-firsttime-almost-60-years/.

What would falsify my thesis

Hello Ivan,

Isaac Newton concluded that if there are two masses, m₁ and m₂, at a distance R from each other, then they are mutually attracted with a force F=G×m₁×m₂/R². If you apply this formula together with F=m×a, it turns out that if you have a large mass such as the Sun and a small one like Earth, the small one will be in an elliptical orbit around the large one.

What am I denying?

Hello Ivan,

We don’t seem to be able to agree about the uncharted territory CO₂ chart, so let’s take a step back to see what we disagree about and to examine our premises.

You seem to expect from me to prove that CO₂ concentration made spikes in the past similar to the one it’s making today. I cannot prove that. On the other hand, I seem to expect from you to prove that it did not make spikes, which of course you can’t prove either. Which one of us has to provide proof?

Carbon dioxide: uncharted territory

Antonis Christofides, 2019-05-27 16:34

Hello Ivan,

The next “fact” with which you deal in your summary is this:

Since 200 years—since the so-called industrial revolution—these changes have become dramatically fast, like putting an unprecedented amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Ivan’s request for comments

Ivan Villanueva, 2019-05-02 12:28

Hello Antonis,

it seems we are entering a new climate era that could disrupt civilization as we know it. I have been reading some stuff on it lately and have crafted my own summary. I would appreciate your comments on it.

A very short summary of data on the climate crisis, with possible catastrophes outlined and contra measures.
